NO, SIR, YOU ARE NOT DEREK JETER

Johnny Damon was one of the catalysts of the Yankees 27th Championship. His one-man double-steal in Game Four that changed the shape of the Series will forever go down in Yankee lore. So, of course, Scott Boras is now ready to anoint Damon as the second coming. The "super-agent" has come out and compared Johnny Damon to Derek Jeter. This is an attempt to get his client a new contract that would be comparable to what the Yankee Captain makes. Wow, hate to tell you, Boras, but that's so far from reality that it can't possibly be your actual tactic. Can it?! Damon is a terrible fielder, while Jeter just won another Gold Glove award. You know what? Forget that, forget any current stat. Simply put: Jeter is a Yankee legend, Damon is not!

Don't get me wrong, I like Johnny Damon just fine, even when he was in a Red Sox uniform actually, but man, Scott Boras is doing him a disservice. He's putting him in a mess similar to ARod's of a couple of years ago. Comparing him to Jeter is just the beginning, Boras has also cited Mariano Rivera and Jorge Posada's contracts, again Yankee legends, and has even compared him to Willie Mays and Pete Rose! What?! Really??? Damon needs to shut his agent up or get rid of him, or, you know, say goodbye to New York. Or maybe he can stay in New York and see if the Mets will jump on for 4 years, but probably not.

Damon is going to have to be realistic, yup there's that word again, and realize no one is going to sign him for more than a year or two. The man was injured in the final game of the World Series, and then admitted his calves stiffen up in the cold. This is not a young guy, no matter what line Boras feeds us. I'm sure he'll be decent in the short term, it's beyond 2 years that I can't buy into, nor does he have the stock here in NY that Jeter, Mo, Jorge do. Sorry, but the Sox let him go for a reason as well. Maybe he really is an Idiot.

In the meantime, the Yankees are looking into possibly trading for Curtis Granderson for center or left field. If that can happen, I'd sign Hideki Matsui and really say goodbye to Johnny Rocket.

I can get behind you on the parts that you rip Damon apart. The rest? ...not so much. ;-)
